When you pull your mower out every weekend to cut your grass, you may find yourself underwhelmed with the results. And you’ve probably seen some cool, manicured lawns in your neighborhood that you’d like to replicate to increase the curb appeal of your property. Fortunately, it’s not too hard to mow patterns into your lawn, provided you know what you’re doing. Here are some helpful tips.

Grow Your Grass Out

You can’t really mow patterns in short grass. You’ll need to wait a few weeks for your grass to grow if you’ve just mown it. Wait for your yard to be at least 3” tall before you try to mow a pattern into it.

Use an Edger

You can make the results of your mowing look even better if you take the time to edge your yard first. Take an edger around the perimeter of your lawn, then use your mower to mow a stripe around the whole border so that you have a place to turn the mower around to continue the pattern you’re attempting to create.

Patterns to Try

  • Circles: Simply mow in concentric circles around a big object in your yard, like a bush, tree, or flower bed. You can mow multiple circles around multiple objects for a cool effect.
  • Stripes: Line up your mower with the edge of your yard and either go up and down or side to side, keeping the mower lined up with the last stripe you mowed each time you turn around.
  • Diamonds/Checkerboard: Start at one corner and mow towards the opposite corner. You’ll have to mow up and down diagonally on both sides of this new line. Then you’ll start at the opposite side and mow back across the lines you’ve created. A 90° angle will make a checkerboard design, while a more obtuse angle will create diamonds.
