With so many different types of mowers out there it can be difficult to choose what’s best for you. However, when it comes to speed and precision, a zero-turn mower is the best of the best! There can be a lot of variation in zero-turn mowers from steering, to deck size, to horsepower. Keep reading for information on the many different features of a zero-turn mower and how they might benefit you!

Steering

The precision of a zero-turn mower is largely thanks to its unique steering mechanism. Operator handles connect to individual wheels allowing you better control over your mower's movement. While every zero-turn mower has this mechanism, there are four different types of steering to choose from.

  • Lap Bar: Despite its name, the lap bar is actually two levers placed at either side of the driver, with each level controlling one wheel.
  • Steering Wheel: Exactly as it sounds, this steering option is one of the easiest to learn as it is identical to a car steering wheel.
  • Joystick: This steering option consists of a single lever near the driver's hip, reminiscent of an old-school arcade game.
  • Standing Controls: This steering option mimics the lap bar while allowing the driver to stand, rather than sit, at the back of the mower.

Every one of these steering methods upholds the zero-turn lawn mower’s unique precision. Therefore, choosing a steering method is largely based on your personal preference and comfort.

Deck Size

A deck, or deck size, refers to the cutting area of your mower. Depending on the size of your lawn you may need a larger or smaller deck size than average. A general guideline is included below:

  • 42” or less: 1 acre of land or less
  • 42”- 46”: 2 acres of land
  • 46”- 50”: 3 acres of land
  • 50” or more: 4 or more acres of land

While this guideline is helpful, it is based only on a rough estimate of your land size. Generally, if you're buying a zero-turn mower it's for its great precision. Therefore, obstacles you might come into contact with, such as a gate or narrow opening, should be included in your decision.

Horsepower

Zero-turn lawn mowers are some of the fastest mowers on the market due to their great horsepower. The impressive strength of a zero-turn engine also makes it a useful tool for hauling materials or other landscaping tasks. Generally, these mowers can struggle with tall grasses above 6 inches, but this problem can be curbed by buying a mower with higher horsepower. Understanding the various uses you have planned for your mower will help you decide on the best horsepower for your needs.
