Company History
John Deere traces its roots all the way back to 1837, when the founder, John Deere, started his small business of tool manufacturing and repairs. Soon enough he was immersed in innovations to improve workflow and made the first steel plow from a saw blade. He also began to display his products, allowing customers to see them before actually making the purchase. During his tenure as president, the company weathered a few economic depressions and he was even elected mayor in 1873 before his death in 1886.
In the following century, John Deere the company went through some of its largest growth periods. It started with the breakthrough into the tractor industry in the early 1900s. Towards the middle of the century, during the Second World War, there was a new opportunity to create product lines when then-president, Charles Deere Wiman, enlisted as an officer and oversaw the farm machinery and equipment division of the War Production Board.
In this century, John Deere is one of the most trusted and recognized brands in the farming and heavy equipment markets. You can spot their iconic green and yellow machines hard at work in a number of worksites. Their leaping deer logo, which is a homage to the original logo from back in 1876, is seen at farms and construction sites across America.
